SNAP is program that helps low-income people living in New York and across the country by providing them with free food. You must meet eligibility requirements to qualify and the amount you get depends on the number of people in your household and your income. New York Family Assistance (FA)
This federal program provides temporary cash assistance to families in need in New York City. You must have a child under the age of 18 and must comply with federal work requirements to to receive these benefits. Safety Net Assistance (SNA)
SNA is a New York state program which provides help to individuals who are single, couples without chidlren, and families that are not getting benefits through FA. The money is meant to be used for basic living expenses. Learn more about SNA here.
Tuition Assistance Program (TAP)
New York also has a Tuition Assitance Program (TAP) which helps students in need to pay for tuition at a post-secondary institution that is approved. The money provided is a grant so does not need to be paid back and can be as high as $5,000. Apply for TAP by filling out the FAFSA.
Aid for Part-time Studies (APTS)
APTS is a program for eligible students in New York who are enrolled part-time in an approved university. Awards can be as high as $2,000 but will not exceed the cost of tuition. The application is separate from the FAFSA and is solely for the APTS.
Section 8 Housing Vouchers
If you are having trouble affording your rent in New York City, you can apply for the Section 8 Housing Assistance Program. If approved, you will receive a housing voucher that covers part of your monthly rental payment. Learn more.

Cell Phone and Service
Cell phones are no longer a luxury. Many people don’t have homes anymore phone so cell phones are the only way to stay in touch with others. If you need a phone and service but cannot afford them, you may be able to get both for free.
