$35,000 W. Eugene Smith Photography Grant

Are you a woman who loves photography and takes beautiful shots? If so, you may qualify for the $35,000 W. Eugene Smith Photography Grant. The photography grant is open to both professional photographers and those who are not yet professional photographers. Women who take beautiful pictures will want to consider this photography grant, which can help them advance their career if they are already professionally in the field, or help to get them started a professional photographer.

W. Eugene Smith died in 1978 at the age of 59, but his legacy lives on through a memorial grant that helps other photographers. His photography work was used in national publications and he left behind photos that are still talked about today. His reputation of having integrity is still admired and one of the things that the judges for the photography grant look for when deciding who will be given a grant. Smith only had $18 in his bank account when he died, which is why the grant fund was established a year after his death. Over the first three decades that the grant was being given out, they received thousands of applicants, and awarded 32 people with the photography grant.

Women who are professional photographers or who have a passion for photography may want to apply for the $35,000 W. Eugene Smith Photography Grant.  Here are some of the important details to know about the photography grant:

  • The photography grant is given to a photographer, whether or professional or amateur, who follows in the same style as W. Eugene Smith. This means the photos have to be in a humanistic nature and be dedicated to compassion. Smith’s photos are known for capturing humanistic moments that invoke a sense of compassion and empathy in the viewer. Some were taken during wars, for example.
  • The photos being submitted can be from a past collection, or they can be from a proposed collection. The photographer has to have a plan in what photos they will submit to ensure that they meet the style requirements.
  • Any woman who is interested in this photography grant will propose a project that will address an important issue that is related to the human condition. The areas that will be considered include social environment, humanitarian concern, social change, armed conflict, psychological, cultural, political, or scientific significance. The idea is to try and express our underlying common humanity through photography.
  • The $35,000 grant that is given to a photographer helps support their quest to carry out a major photographic essay. One recipient receives $35,000 to help support their project. Additionally, each year they give away one $5,000 photography fellowship, and two additional finalists receive a grant of $2,500 to help support their photography project.
  • There is an award ceremony each year, where the person who wins the award is acknowledged. The ceremony takes place in New York City each October.
  • Grant submissions are accepted each year starting on January 1 and going through the end of April. Applicants will be notified each July if they have won. The winner of the grant is announced to the public each October.
  • The person who wins the photography grant will be given a $20,000 check to start with, then an additional $5,000 when the first six photos are submitted, with the additional $10,000 being paid once all the photos in the project have been submitted.
  • To apply, photographers need to submit a written bio and a resume that does not exceed 500 words. The project needs to be explained, including how the grant funds will be used to help with it. Applicants can submit up to 40 images with their application.
  • All applications are reviewed by a 3-member jury that meets twice. They review the photographs, as well as the written proposals. They will narrow down the selection to a few finalists, who will be asked to submit a short video describing their proposal project.

Women who love to show the human element through photography should consider applying for the $35,000 W. Eugene Smith Photography Grant. The grant is open to professional photographers, as well as those who love photography and aspire to make it their career. This project is not open to students, but they do also offer a specific student photography grant. All applications must be made online.
