Public Housing Options and Application

The HUD Public Housing Program provides very low income families with housing that is owned by the government. The units may be apartment buildings or single family homes, depending on where you are located. HUD owns 1.2 million public housing units around the country, providing people with a lot of options to choose from. To be eligible for HUD public housing you have to meet the low income requirements, be a citizen or legal immigrant, and you need to have good references so that they know your family will be a good tenant in the housing unit.

To apply for HUD public housing for women, you will need to fill out an application in writing. You will provide your contact information, contact information of previous landlords, income information, employment verification, and your family characteristics. You may also be required to submit such documents as birth certificates and tax returns. Once you submit the application for public housing someone from Public Housing Authority will visit you and our family at your current home, so that they can see how well you take care of it.

You will be notified if you have been approved for the public housing or not. If you are approved, your name will go on a wait list, and you will wait for a unit to come available. When a public housing unit becomes available you will have to sign a lease for it, and you may also be required to put down a security deposit. The amount of rent you that you pay for your public housing unit will depend on your family’s income. HUD uses a formula to determine the rent, which includes taking into consideration the family’s adjusted monthly income and welfare rent.

Once you are in a public housing unit you can typically stay for as long as you would like to, providing you are complying with the terms and rules of your lease. Public housing units typically look just like other apartments in homes, and many people may not realize you are living in public housing. The program provides women with a good way to obtain affordable housing and be able to keep their overall monthly expenses down to a manageable amount.

To apply for HUD public housing for women you will need to first contact your state’s Public Housing Agency.  The agency will have information about applying for the public housing, and should be able to tell you where the public housing units are located closest to you. This will give you an idea of where you will be living if you get approved for the program and get to move into a public housing unit.
